Creating Sound for Video: Connections that lead to opportunities
Emotional moments in video are often accompanied by sound, perhaps a musical score that strikes a chord, heightening the emotions in video. Or hear a piece of music in the context of a striking visual or scene. Video also brings context to sound. Starting today, we’ll explore the complementary relationship between sound and video. We’ll meet SoundCloud community members who have had opportunities to experiment with creating for video and film.
Spread across four different countries, five SoundCloud community members collaborated to create the soundtrack for web tv series After Hell, a story of post-apocalyptic zombie life.
SoundClouders Cyra Morgan (based in Rochester, New York) contributed vocals, Deane Ogden (Jakarta, Indonesia and Los Angeles, CA) played drums, Dave McKeown (Devon, UK) contributed clarinet and flute, Oliver Sadie played the piano, and his wife Penny Sadie played the cello from London, UK.
The opportunity to not only score but also produce the show came directly from connecting with the show’s creator Alexander Hölzl at the 2011 G-tech creativity competition, said Oliver, who also produced the series. Oliver was a music finalist in the competition with the help of the SoundCloud community.
Building connections with the SoundCloud community has impacted Oliver’s professional career as a composer in film and television. “I have learned so much from people of all musical backgrounds and it has been immensely rewarding.” He emphasizes that if you’re planning a similar venture, don’t do it alone.

Community Collaboration | SoundCloud Tombola

SoundClouder David Barclay organized the SoundCloud Tombola, a project in which interested SoundClouders were paired at random to collaborate with each other.

Hear the results of how community members (some who had never met or connected before) were matched to create something new together.

If you’re organizing a community activity on SoundCloud, let us know too.

SoundCloud of the Day | Jens Felger

Jens Felger is generous with his talent and time on SoundCloud. He responds to comments, collaborates internationally on a regular basis, and constantly gives credit to other people in the descriptions of his songs. Plus, he links to their profiles, so that you can easily find them.

Dreamers is a collaboration between Felgers, who contributes gorgeous classical guitar, and Davide Costa, who contributes spare piano and the soundscape. The interplay between instruments is made more interesting by the inclusion of unexpected minor notes. The result is a constant tension that is never quite resolved.

SoundCloud Tombola Radio | Episode 3

SoundClouder David Barclay started a radio show to share creations from participants of the SoundCloud Community Tombola David organized. The SoundCloud Community Tombola is an opportunity for people to be paired randomly to create something new together.

Enjoy Episode 3 and listen to past Episodes here.

The Audio Spotlight | A Conversation with Deane Ogden about Eastern Chronicle

Composer and SoundClouder Deane Ogden created a global collaborative album “Eastern Chronicle” featuring more than 200 musicians, singers and production personnel who were involved in this 18-month process. Ogden traveled across eight different countries in East Asia and used SoundCloud to manage the project.

Listen to a track-by-track discussion and breakdown of Deane Ogden’s debut album Eastern Chronicle, from conception to release. Read more about this special project here

Barclaybunch | SoundCloud Collaboration Tombola Spring 2013

We’re excited about SoundClouder David Barclay's Tombola challenge that's back again this year.

Throw your name into the ring to be paired with another sound creator in the community. It’s an opportunity to connect with previously unknown SoundClouders to create something amazing together.

Last year, he had almost 100 people join and created an album with proceeds that went to UNICEF. This year, he’d love to see thousands more join in the fun. Let’s help him achieve this.

To participate, learn more at http://sctombola.wordpress.com/2013/04/01/570/.

Disquiet Junto Project 0065: Piano Overlay
The Disquiet Junto is a communal music-making group on SoundCloud.
"This week’s Disquiet Junto project theme is asynchronous collaboration — in other words, making things together separately. We will make new compositions based on short, discrete, randomly assigned segments of a single, 60-minute piano composition. Collectively these will form a longer, collaborative suite.”
Anyone is welcome to participate. Head here to find out how and join this creative group of creators.
Hear the submissions from this past weekend’s project at https://soundcloud.com/disquiet/sets/disquiet0065-pianoverlay. More than 50 atmospheric sounds that transport you to outer space.
